If you’ve never heard of the MSC Meraviglia (pronounced mer-a-vil-ya. The “G” is silent) you are in for a treat. With one of the most diverse food selections at sea and a Las Vegas level promenade (more on that later), the Meraviglia is definitely a ship you’ll want to book when it starts sailing out of New York City in October. Just how impressive is MSC’s Meraviglia? Let’s dive into it.
Gorgeous. If asked how to describe the Meraviglia in one word, that would be it. From the Swarovski crystal filled staircases in the atrium (no, that was not a misprint) to the elegant promenade, this ship is a sight to behold. Let’s start with the Galleria Meraviglia.
The 315 ft. central promenade has the longest domed ceiling at sea. It’s covered by an enormous 5,200 sq. ft. LED screen that changes to suit the mood. Sunrises, sunsets, stained glass, spectacular light shows, and other visually stunning demonstrations will keep you mesmerized. To give you an idea what to expect, if you’ve ever been to the incredible Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas at night, then you know exactly what to expect.
After you pull your eyes away from the light show in the ceiling, you get to the heart of the 2-story promenade. You’ll feel like you’re walking down a street in Italy. Restaurants, boutiques, shops, line both sides of the promenade. It’s a great place to meet up with your traveling companions. While you wait for them to arrive, sit in one of the seating areas and take in the music filtering through the area.
The pool ara is a popular spot on every single cruise ship. The problem is that the pools tend to be small and crowded. The Meraviglia compensates for that by giving you two pools – The Horizon Pool and the Atmosphere Pool.
The Horizon Pool is your standard size pool for a cruise ship. What sets it apart is the number of deck chairs. No need to compete for the “best” places. This creates an ideal space to lay out in the sun.
When the stars fill the sky, the Horizon Pool area becomes a place to let loose and get your groove on. During the course of your cruise, this will be the place for live entertainment and dancing.
The Atmosphere Pool is more like a traditional cruise ship swimming pond. It’s bigger than the Horizon Pool. A standout feature is the 108 sq. ft. of pool area and gives Atmosphere space for passengers to spread out at the pool without feeling cramped.
When the sun goes down, this pool area lights up. Literally. The gigantic screen plays movies and even televised sporting events. The evening lighting also makes it a good place to come and sit with a drink.
Restaurants and Dining
When it comes to dining, MSC Cruises as a whole is one of the best when it comes to food variety. This does come with a disclaimer. If you like trying foods from different cultures with ingredients not commonly used in typical American cooking, you may not like some of the food onboard an MSC ship.
Put another way: If you only like “American food”, an MSC cruise is not for you. That isn’t to say an MSC cruise doesn’t have excellent American style food. There are cuisines familiar to most Americans: Butcher’s Cut American-style steakhouse, ¡HOLA! Tapas bar by Ramón Freixa, Kaito Teppanyaki Restaurant & Sushi Bar & Ocean Cay Restaurant.
We want to highlight the Marketplace Buffet. MSC provides the most unique food options at sea. For example, lots of ships offer pizza. But MSC specializes in pizza. There are the usual suspects: pepperoni, sausage, mushroom. But how many ships can you get a pizza with prosciutto, shaved parmesan, and arugula?
Let’s put it this way: If you like (or love) pizza, you need to book a cruise on the Meraviglia sailing out of New York. Did we mention they make all their mozzarella on the ship? You won’t find that anywhere else on the seas.
When we talked about the Galleria Meraviglia, we made a reference to the Las Vegas quality light show. That’s not the only thing that is of Vegas quality. The ship hosts a Cirque Du Soleil production called Cirque Du Soleil At Sea. And it’s the same quality of show that you enjoy in Las Vegas.
And yet, it’s different. For one, the 10,000 sq. ft theater is on the ocean and subject to the motion of the sea. The Carousel Lounge seats up to 450 guests. And for 120 of those guests, it becomes dinner and a show. Not a snack. A full dinner.
Depending on your age (we’re going to date ourselves here) you might remember racing your friends down the street in your Big Wheels. Wouldn’t it be cool to relive those feelings as a kid?
The F1 Simulators aboard the MSC Meraviglia lets you recreate those memories. You can even race head to head in the virtual-reality racing simulator.
Bars and Lounges
There are a number of bars and lounges to unwind in or enjoy a sophisticated evening.
Jean-Philippe Maury Chocolaterie is one place you must stop on your cruise. It’s not included with the cost of your cruise, but it’s definitely worth the money.
Watch them make chocolate and masterpieces of art made from chocolate right in front of you. Chef Maury has a gourmet ice cream parlor and creperie on the promenade as well.
The Champagne Bar along with the Edge Cocktail Bar are sophisticated areas that make dressing up worth the trip.
The Carousel Loung is home to the Cirque du Soleil shows in the evening hours. However, it serves as a disco after the Cirque shows have finished.
One of the things we haven’t touched on are the staterooms. All staterooms on the MSC Merviglia are flat-out beautiful. Even the interior staterooms are a sight to behold. You won’t feel like you got sloppy leftovers because the only cabins remaining were interior rooms. Nor will you feel you had to compromise if finances require you to choose an interior stateroom.
Aside from the modern styling, all cabins come with a shower. If you’re new to cruising, you might be wondering why mentioning a shower is listed as a feature. Those who have been on other cruise lines know why this is a big deal. You get a shower with a door. Not a shower curtain. A real door.
For solo travelers, the MSC Meriviglia offers studio cabins that are stylish and comfortable for the solo traveler.
