Cruise Tip Friday: Install the Cruise Line App

With all the excitement of beginning your cruise, there’s the possibility of missing some important things. One way to compensate is to install the cruise line app. Features vary depending on the cruise line. But not installing it could cost you.

The first thing you should do before leaving for your cruise is to install the app. Here’s a list of apps from popular cruise lines:

Is Using the App Really Necessary?

There are a number of things you can do with the app that we will discuss momentarily. But is it necessary to use the app? In truth, no. There’s nothing that you can do with the app (with one exception) that you cannot do without it.

And while that’s true, if you’ve ever waited at guest services, you know how long and painful that experience can be. The staff will treat you well. But the larger the ship, the longer the wait.

So what can the app do to make your cruise experience more enjoyable?

Things You Can Do On the App Before You Cruise Begins

Before you even leave for your cruise you can use the app to begin the boarding process. You can check-in and prepare your boarding documents. While you’re at it, you can find and book excursions so you don’t have to wait in line for guest services.

This is also a good time to inspect the ship. You can do a virtual tour to see where the restaurants are located, view the menus, learn about the entertainment and other fun stuff available on the ship.

What Can You Do With the App Once Onboard?

Once you’re on the ship, the app really shows his usefulness. With your cellular data turned off so you don’t get hit with massive roaming charges, you can use the ship’s wifi at no cost. As long as you’re only trying to use the app.

A key feature is being able to communicate with members of your group. Depending on the cruise line, you may have to pay a fee. In the end, though, you’ll be able to chat with everyone in your group.

Another key feature is that you can get a digital copy of the daily newsletter. This is an extremely helpful feature. Especially when the official ship time changes to reflect the local time of the port you pull into.

You’ll also have the daily schedule for activities on the ship. Finished laying out in the sun and don’t know what to do next? Don’t dig out that big paper and flip through to see what’s happening. Whip out that phone and easily scroll through and pick something to keep the party moving.

Other things you can do with the app while on board is getting the weather and reminders. And if you’re using the Carnival app, you can even order pizza for delivery anywhere on the ship!

How Much Is It Worth To You?

Installing the app on an iPhone or Android device is free. Connecting to the wifi is also free to use depending on the cruise line with the exception of texting other people in your group.

But that’s not the costs we’re talking about.

You’re on a cruise ship to be on vacation. Typically, people go on vacation to get away from the routine of daily life. For most people that includes carrying their cell phone with them. Depending on your preferences, you may or may not want to drag your phone with you everywhere, especially if you don’t pay for the internet package (the courtesy wifi only works on the ship and won’t get you to the internet).

There’s nothing to say that you have to carry your phone with you everywhere, every day. Nonetheless, we think it’s still a good idea to install the app. If you choose to never use it, the worst that can happen is a few kilobytes is consumed. At least in the few instances, you might feel like using it, it will be there at your command.
